KADUREGEL-SHEFEL BY GAD SALNER AND VADIM TARASOV
"Kaduregel-Shefel (translated as 'peripheral' football) started years ago, when we became tired of watching mainstream football, whether it was the shining but ultimately fake Champions League, the sheik controlled English Premier League or our own Israeli Premier League.
We started a journey to seek the places that the passion for true football still exists, whether it is in the Arab villages of the north, or the forgotten dusty Jewish neighbourhoods of the south of Israel.
We started the road trip at fourth division match, in the Arab village of Umm El Fahem where we were stopped by a local police officer, asking for our ID, to check that we are not right wing extremists looking to for trouble. He wasn't the only one that day that asked himself what are we doing there.
We visited Bne-Yichelel FC, the wonderful Jewish-Ethiopian team from Rehovot, we visited Nujidat and their league qualification gala (following promotion to the fourth division). We travelled to the southern city of Dimona, we were part of a crowd of thousands at the Tirrah vs. Kfar Kassem (two neighbouring Arab villages) 'classico', and met their Jewish captain (who happens to be a kindergarten teacher in Tel-Aviv).
All of this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to covering the everyday rivalries and struggles that were put aside just to play football in Israel, and enjoying the cultural diversity that this nation has to offer."
