THE SANTIAGO BERNABÉU TROPHY AND MILLONARIOS FC BY ADIDAS

In the end, Colombian side Millonarios, who arrived in Madrid this week to take on Real for the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy, were comprehensively outclassed by the home side in an 8-0 defeat

So what was the game all about?

It all started in Argentina, in 1949, with the footballers' strike which led to Alfredo di Stefano departing from River Plate and heading to Millonarios de Bogotá.  At this stage, Real had only won two league championships and were a far cry from the illustrious club renowned throughout the world we know today.

In 1952, Real celebrated their fiftieth anniversary with a triangular set of friendly matches, involving Sweden's Norrköping and Colombia's Millonarios.  The star of the show, inevitably, was the blonde arrow himself.  Santiago Bernabeu was so impressed by the performances of the Argentine that he ensured di Stefano didn’t leave Madrid without signing for Real, much to the annoyance of Barcelona who were also keen.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Ahead of the match, adidas launched a major advertising campaign in Colombia to highlight a limited edition kit for El Azul.
