It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid, or worry about which football books to give and receive. IBWM has featured several lately we consider 'must haves' and here's another to add to that list.

Hatters, Railwaymen and Knitters (hereafter referred to as 'HRK') is a wonderful read and like some of the very best football books out there, the actual football is merely a footnote. Author Daniel Gray has turned thirty and as he has now lived in Scotland for over a decade, he embarks on a journey to reconnect with England via taking in games at clubs who had significant moments during the season of his birth (1981/82). Each of the thirteen chapters takes in a different game and weaves in a wonderful walk through the town involved's history and nuances.

There is still plenty of the beautiful game within, the nature of football support and supporters explored and the changing nature of England and Englishness is really well observed, football (as ever) the framework for wider issues of industry and identity. Really enjoyable and beautifully paced, this is one to read and keep as in ten years time it could feel even more relevant than it does right now.
