Georgi Schennikov

Georgi Schennikov    20      Defender    CSKA Moscow

It’s no surprise that so many players on this list play predominantly at full-back as it is the position in football which has evolved the most in recent years. Once the domain of the player not deemed good enough to become an out and out winger, full-backs now offer far more in terms of attacking options than most midfielders. Add to that list Georgi Schennikov, a talented Russian left back whose performances for CSKA last season attracted the attention of some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs with Liverpool in particular very interested in securing his services.

A watching brief is being maintained by many and it seems likely that the Moscow born defender will make the step up to the full national side in the next year. Comfortable on the ball, more than willing to chase lost causes and providing support to both defence and attack when necessary, his steady progression has only been hampered by injury. Now playing regularly and learning as he goes, if Shennikov continues to progress at the same rate he will comfortably be among the best in Europe in his position within a couple of seasons.

“Injury halted development of late however the past year has been a breakthrough one. Has become a regular fixture and plays beyond his years” - Domm Norris (Slavic Football Union)
