John McGovern is 62 today.

The Montrose born midfielder was one of Brian Clough’s most devoted lieutenants following his mentor from Hartlepool to Derby on to a short stint at Leeds before pitching up at Nottingham Forest in February 1975.

McGovern’s loyalty to his manager was well rewarded too, he picked up two first division winners medals, but the real pinnacle of McGovern’s career was lifting the European Cup twice as captain of Forest in 1979 and 1980.  Despite McGovern’s achievements, he was never capped as a full international by Scotland.

Highlights from the European Cup semi final first leg on April 9 1980 here with Forest, including McGovern, clinching a 2-0 victory over a fairly lacklustre Ajax at the City Ground.
