GUUS HIDDINK: QUARTERBACK
Mr Guus gets his bus pass today.
Guus Hiddink (65, just) has a reputation as one of the finest coaches in world football, but if you track back through his record, there’s not an awful lot apart from two fairly prolific spells with PSV between 1984-1990 and 2002-2006. Although, to be fair, they were pretty spectacular.
The real highlight of Hiddink’s career was leading PSV to the European Cup in 1988 and while it’s tempting to dig out some footage of their run here, there’s not an awful lot to choose from. In fact, the Eindhoven side managed to lift the title by winning only three of nine ties in the tournament, a mix of away goals and penalty shoot outs (in the final against Benfica) seeing the Dutch side through.
We did, however, find this brief clip from Dutch TV. An ability to speak Dutch will help, but you don’t need subtitles to see how Hiddink the player could pick out a pass for De Graafschap, his club from 1972-77.
