LEAGUE CUP FINAL 1974: WOLVES 2 MANCHESTER CITY 1
Like we ever need an excuse to raid the 1970's vault.....
97,886 were at Wembley on 2 March 1974 to see underdogs Wolverhampton Wanderers clinch the English League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City.
City, incorporating the talents of Lee, Summerbee, Bell and Law, were well fancied to win the game at a canter, and perhaps arrived at the twin towers with something of a cocksure outlook, personified by Rodney Marsh’s wasteful forward play. Not that Wolves were without decent players of their own – Alan Sunderland and Derek Dougan were very capable, but it’s the scorer of Wolves first goal that we salute on this occasion.
Kenny Hibbitt played over 460 games for Wolves and certainly meets the criteria to be named as a Black Country legend. He’s 61 today, so if the thought of Molineux brings you out in goosebumps, you’ll enjoy this. Best wishes Kenny.
