The Promised Land tells the story of *that* season in Manchester United's history, the one that had it all. Working through month-by-month there's a layer of detail here that goes far beyond the stories you know and the matches you remember. Admittedly this is obviously written for United's followers and the 'Anyone But' crowd won't even entertain it we imagine, but that's a shame as there's much here that goes beyond 'just' being a book about a divisive club's greatest season.

Superbly written, there are nuggets of gold throughout and for our money the account of the semi-final in Turin and Roy Keane's performance were an obvious highlight. Keane perhaps sums up the United of the modern era - reviled and revered in equal measure but always noteworthy. We know this book won't appeal to all but it was read and thoroughly enjoyed by a Brighton fan here at IBWM Towers, a small measure of the wider appeal, and if you want a book that feels like it has the real Sir Alex Ferguson in it we'd suggest you go for this over that 'other' one.
