THEIR WORK BRINGS VICTORY

THEIR WORK BRINGS VICTORY

Let’s spare a thought for football’s hardest workers; the ball-winners, the anchor-men, the defensive and downright destructive midfielders who dirty their feet for the greater good.  These thankless grafters aren’t out for goals or personal glory; they’re here to support the collective because THEIR WORK BRINGS VICTORY!

Having asked six football writers to nominate their favourite defensive midfielder, self-styled ‘crap polymath’ Henry Cooke has created a series of posters borrowing from iconic British, Russian and North Korean propaganda.  The result?  'THEIR WORK BRINGS VICTORY' - a collaborative project that combines written testimonies with slightly mad imagery – and all for the love of hard work.

The idea came about due to Henry’s affection for technically challenged footballers:

“I’ve always admired midfielders like Chris Marsden and Steve Lomas because, like me, they had no spatial awareness or pace, but they compensated by running loads and going really red in the face.  But as no-one other than me wants to see a highly-stylised poster of Mark Pembridge, I thought I’d ask some talented writers to nominate their favourite defensive midfielders – then I channelled my love of propaganda posters into something, I hope, is a little bit different”.

You can see all six propaganda posters from the ‘Their Work Brings Victory’ project over at Henry’s site ‘Look What it Means to Him’.
